The Shaft Does More Work Than the Label Suggests

Most golfers can name their shaft's flex letter and stop there. Four separate properties actually decide how a shaft performs, and none of them is fully captured by that single letter on the sticker.

What's Actually Being Measured

Flex

How much the shaft bends and unloads through the downswing. A letter grade, not a number — and not standardized between manufacturers.

Weight

Total mass in grams. Shapes swing tempo and effort more directly than flex does on its own.

Torque

Resistance to twisting around its own axis under load. Lower numbers feel firmer; higher numbers feel softer off the face.

Kick Point

Where along the shaft the bend concentrates. A lower kick point tends to launch the ball higher for the same flex rating.

Why the Flex Letter Lies a Little

Stiff From One Brand Isn't Stiff From Another

There's no industry body that defines what "Stiff" actually means in bend measurements, so two shafts carrying the same letter from two different manufacturers can play meaningfully different. A shaft that feels right for your swing speed but flexes too much through the downswing can leave the face open at impact; one that resists bending too much can rob you of feel and make timing the release harder.

We treat the printed flex as a starting point for testing, never as the final answer — the launch monitor tells us whether the label is actually true for the shaft in your hands.

Three Constructions, Three Different Jobs

Steel

Denser and more uniform from unit to unit, which is why it remains the default for iron and wedge shafts among players who lean on feel to gauge distance.

Graphite

Trims overall weight enough to raise clubhead speed for players who benefit from it, while quieting vibration at impact. The default choice for drivers and fairway woods.

Multi-Material

A steel tip fused to a graphite body, aiming to keep the feel golfers expect from steel while shedding some of its weight — increasingly common in modern iron sets.

Cutting Happens Before the First Fitting Data Point

A shaft blank arrives longer than it will ever play, and where we cut it matters as much as how much. Removing material from the tip stiffens the shaft and generally pulls launch and spin down, since that's the section flexing hardest through the downswing. Cutting from the butt instead trims length and total weight while barely touching how the shaft feels at impact.

Torque and trim aren't independent decisions — shortening a shaft raises its effective stiffness even without changing the labeled flex, so we re-verify torque and frequency together every time either one moves.
